Technical Workshops and Roundtable Sessions on the Integrated Strategy for Radioactive Waste (ISRW)

Thank you for your interest in being part of the development of an integrated strategy for long-term management of radioactive waste in Canada.

It’s important that we hear from Canadians and Indigenous peoples representing a variety of interests and perspective who are interested in or impacted by this Strategy development process.

In addition to our Community Engagement Sessions, which are open to the general public, the NWMO will be inviting representatives from Industry, Municipalities, Public Service, Civil Society Organizations, Academia and Youth to participate in Roundtable Sessions. Later in the summer, the NWMO will be hosting a series of Technical Sessions, open to anyone with an interest in learning more about, and contributing their views, to the technical considerations for the various options of managing low-level and intermediate-level waste. These events are part of a larger engagement process and a next step in planning for the safe management of Canada’s radioactive waste for the long term.

We want to develop a solution collaboratively with you and welcome all voices and perspectives.

About the Technical Workshops

Are you interested in taking part in one of the Technical Workshops, but would like to know a bit more about them?

Below are the planned Technical Workshops. In order to maximize the number of citizens who can participate, please only register for one session per topic. At this time, due to the current pandemic situation, all sessions will be virtual. Note that all sessions will be bilingual, offered in English with simultaneous French translation. More than one date may be offered for certain topics:

1. Low Level Waste (audience: technical specialists)
2. Low Level Waste (audience: laypeople) 
3. Intermediate Level Waste (audience: technical specialists)
4. Intermediate Level Waste (audience: laypeople)

About the Roundtable Sessions

Over the summer, the NWMO will be inviting representatives from Industry, Municipalities, Public Service, Civil Society Organizations, Academia and Youth to participate in Roundtable Sessions. Each group will have the opportunity to share perspectives that are important to them.

If you would like your organization to be invited to participate in a Roundtable Session, please express your interest via email to info@radwasteplanning.ca indicating your name, email, postal code, the organization you represent, and the relevant Roundtable Session category in which you have an interest (Industry, Municipalities, Public Service, Civil Society Organizations, Academia or Youth).

For Civil Society Organizations and representatives from Industry, we look forward to your formal presentations as well.  Please refer to our Information Session materials here (slides 16-18) for details and requirements on making formal presentations or submitting materials.  We look forward to seeing you soon.

About the Youth Engagement Activities 

Over the past two years, the NWMO invited youth to participate in youth focus groups and engagement sessions. The NWMO also commissioned independently moderated youth activities. Each group had the opportunity to share perspectives that are important to them.

We are thrilled to announce the NWMO was recognized by the International Association for Public Participation (IAP2) with a Diversity and Inclusion Award for our work engaging young Canadians and Indigenous Peoples on the development of an Integrated Strategy for Radioactive Waste (ISRW).
